Subaru to introduce Eyesight for manual-transmission models

Subaru customers who still opt on rowing gearboxes will soon enjoy the benefits of the legendary Eyesight technology.

This as the automotive firm announced that its driver assist system is being developed for their manual transmission models.

Per Subaru Corporation, Eyesight for manual transmission vehicles shall debut on the BRZ in the fall season in Japan (September-November) 2023.  

To note, the Subaru Eyesight is the world’s first driver assistive system that uses stereo camera technology that detects other vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists within the vehicle’s path — providing pre-collision braking as well as adaptive cruise control.

Since its debut in 2008, cumulative global sales of Subaru vehicles equipped with the Eyesight driver assist system have already breached the 5.5-million-unit mark.

According to Subaru, the upcoming manual-gearbox specific Eyesight technology was adopted from the existing program found on the Subaru BRZ’s automatic transmission variety. This means that the soon-to-be-launched program will also offer pre-collision braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure and sway warning, lead vehicle start alert, and rear sonar warning.

“While retaining its high performance in collision avoidance, collision damage mitigation, and in reducing the driver’s workload, the new Eyesight system is now combined with control tailored to the driving and operating characteristics of MT vehicles. This allows the system to operate in a wide range of real-world situations, providing a high level of driving enjoyment and peace of mind,” the company added.

Further, Subaru vowed to continue to enhance safety through its primary, driving, passive, preventive, and connected safety technologies under its “All-Around Safety” principle, which underpins “Enjoyment and Peace of Mind” for all drivers and passengers.

“Through these efforts, we aim to achieve zero fatal road accidents in 2030,” the firm noted.

Last year, the BRZ sports car received the 2022 Top Safety Pick+ recognition from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

In a statement, the automotive car manufacturer’s arm in the United States said that the nameplate secured the IIHS top honor due to the Eyesight Driver Assist Technology that now comes as standard equipment on models with an automatic gearbox offering.
