Suzuki celebrates achievement for 2 million units accumulated auto exports in India
Maruti Suzuki India Limited (Maruti Suzuki), celebrates a milestone for hitting outstanding automobile exports in India, as the Indian subsidiary of the Japanese multinational corporation has achieved an accumulated export record of 2 million units on February 27, 2021. Suzuki’s compact cars like Swift and compact SUVs Vitara Brezza and S-PRESSO were exported from India’s Mundra Port to Different areas in South Africa.
Maruti Suzuki began exporting the Maruti 800 to surrounding Asian countries in the 1980s. It was then when Suzuki president Osamu Suzuki heard of the news that the Indian government was recruiting a partner to develop a concept car for the people. After several attempts and having been considered a reserve candidate, Suzuki was accepted as the Indian government’s partner to develop the concept car which was to be called the Maruti 800.
The Maruti became a hit as it competed mostly with imported cars from Europe and around the world, which was too expensive and out of reach for the average person. The Maruti was based on the Alto in Japan that was popular for its reasonable price and reliable quality. It was met with eager success and became the standard means of transportation for the average person. Thus, started Suzuki’s involvement in the Indian automotive industry.
The Maruti was dubbed India’s best-selling car from the 1980s and early 1990s until 2004 when the Maruti Alto nabbed the title. Throughout the years, Maruti Suzuki exported the Maruti 800’s predecessors including the aforementioned Maruti Alto and the Maruti A-Star in global destinations like Europe and Asia. The company’s first large shipment was an export to Hungary back in 1987, and although it took Suzuki Maruti 26 years to reach its first million, the next few years saw an exponential boost in export sales.
In march 2018, Maruti Suzuki started shipping models produced at Suzuki Motor Gujarat Private Limited, a 100% subsidiary of Suzuki for production of automobiles. In less than 9 years, Suzuki Maruti achieved its second million. That said, Suzuki Maruti’s selection of vehicles for export grew significantly.
Suzuki Maruti now exports 14 models including the Baleno, Swift, and Dzire, to over 100 countries and regions worldwide. And in January of 2021, Suzuki Maruti began exporting the Jimny. They grew not only their export offerings but also their presence in different countries including Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East.
India has been and will remain an important production and export hub for Suzuki. In conjunction with the Japanese car maker’s business objectives, Suzuki continues to strengthen its ties with Maruti Suzuki and bolster manufacturing capabilities. On that note, Suzuki continues to show support to the Indian government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative.
