Taycan software update offers improved driving dynamics and smarter features

The Porsche Taycan receives new software updates that give the all-electric sedan a slew of intelligent enhancements. But is it enough to set it apart from its toughest competition, the Model S from Tesla? Porsche claims that the updates, though small and incremental, can significantly enhance the Taycan ownership experience.

Included are additional features to the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system, improved Porsche Connect functionality, and overall improvements to drivability and usability.

When the update rolls out, owners can experience improvements including enhancements in the Taycan’s embedded navigation system which will now display more data, like in-depth traffic updates and lane-specific information.

Taycan models outfitted with adaptive air suspension will be upgraded to include the Smartlift function as part of the software update. Conveniently, frequently visited locations where the lift function is used can be stored in the vehicle, allowing the Taycan to automatically activate the feature when returning to the saved location.

Control units responsible for powertrain and suspension control, resulting in further improved driving dynamics and performance, will also be recalibrated after the software update.

Charging is now also tweaked as owners can reduce the maximum DC charging power from 270kW to 200kW for each charging session to further optimize HV battery service life and performance.

Searching for charging stations have also been simplified, improving overall user experience. The on-board Charging Planner also offers the added feature to pre-select a specific state of charge during DC fast charging, or letting the system determine when to stop the charging process.

Infotainment-wise, the update includes wireless Apple CarPlay, and when Apple ID is linked to a vehicle, Apple Podcasts including video streaming and Apple Music Lyrics can be accessed. That said, there’s still no Android Auto. In addition, vehicles outfitted with Ambient Lighting features can now have the option to change the color based on the music that is playing.

Porsche will also offer Functions on Demand (FoD), flexible upgrades that can be had through over-the-air updates after the initial vehicle point of sale, although FoD compatibility will be dependent on vehicle configuration. These include niceties like Active Lane Keep Assist and Porsche InnoDrive.

Taycan owners can choose if they want to purchase the function or sign up for a monthly subscription, with a three-month trial period available for the latter option. Desired functions can be selected from the Porsche Connect Store and a data package will be sent to the Taycan that takes only a few minutes to activate.

It’s important to note that the actual system update requires a scheduled appointment and Taycan owners will have to visit a service center to get it. The update is going to be free of charge although it will take about two business days to complete it. A loaner car can be arranged if needed.

Locally, Porsche offers different Taycan models including the original Taycan, the Taycan 4 Cross Turismo, the Taycan 4S, the Taycan 4S Cross Turismo, the Taycan Turbo, the Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo, and the Taycan Turbo S.
