Ford Philippines spiced up the local compact crossover scene with the arrival of the next-generation version of the Territory.
The arrival of the “bigger, better” Ford Territory meant that Filipino car buyers now have a better choice when shopping for a spacious daily driver or a weekend family carrier.
But, its arrival was not met without challenge.
Today, we pit the next-generation Ford Territory against one of the most popular nameplates in the compact crossover segment, the Toyota Corolla Cross. To answer which of these two automobiles best suits your style, budget, and motoring needs, join us until the end of this article.
The next-generation Ford Territory measures 4,630 millimeters (mm) long, 1,935mm wide, and 1,706mm tall. It has a 190mm ground clearance and a 2,726mm wheelbase.
Meanwhile, the Toyota Corolla Cross has an overall length of 4,455mm, an overall width of 1,825mm, and an overall height of 1,620mm. Its ground clearance is 161mm and its wheelbase is 2,640mm.
Outside, the next-generation Ford Territory wears a newly designed honeycomb grille that somehow looks like scales. It comes in a two-tone finish and is flanked by active cornering LED headlights, LED daytime running lights (DRL), and front fog lamps.
At the rear of the next-generation Ford Territory are LED taillamps, a third brake lamp integrated on the roof-mounted spoiler, a rear diffuser, and a bold “TERRITORY” script.
It rides on impressive 19-inch alloy wheels.
As for the Toyota Corolla Cross, its front end is bedecked with bi-beam LED headlights, LED DRLs with line guides, and LED fog lamps that surround its black honeycomb grille.
Its rear gets LED combination lamps, a durable-looking diffuser, and bold “COROLLA CROSS” badging.
It dons a set of 18-inch alloy wheels.
With nearly identical exterior features, we’re going to call this round a tie.
Inside, the next-gen Ford Territory offers likewise next-generation feels. Immediately, owners are greeted with Ford’s take on a seamless digital experience with a 12-inch instrument cluster and a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto.
The top-of-the-line variant also gets perforated leather seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a leather armrest, a panoramic moonroof, and a wireless charging bay.
As for the Toyota Corolla Cross, the Japanese compact crossover comes with a seven-inch instrument panel and a floating eight-inch infotainment system with wired Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto.
Those picking out the sportier GR-S variant can expect a host of more aggressive interior appointments like seats in GR-S leather, a leather steering wheel, also a leather armrest, and a leather shift knob.
In this round, the vehicle with newer features is declared the winner as its updated amenities can potentially attract more car buyers. On that note, this round goes to the next-generation Ford Territory.
Under the hood, the next-generation Ford Territory is fitted with a 1.5-liter Ecoboost gasoline-fed powerplant mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. This setup makes 157 horsepower (hp) and 248 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque.
On the other hand, the Toyota Corolla Cross packs a larger, 1.8-liter mill paired with a continuously variable transmission. Its hybrid variants get a little help thanks to a motor generator that boosts the maximum power output of the crossover.
The naturally aspirated model makes around 138hp with 172Nm of torque, while the hybrid models put out 120 horses with 142Nm of pulling power.
With a better and more powerful setup, this round goes yet again to the next-generation Ford Territory.
Safety-wise, Ford packed the next-gen Territory with features like a host of seatbelts and airbags, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go function, autonomous emergency brake with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, a collision mitigation system, and a high-definition 360-degree camera, to name a few.
Meanwhile, the Toyota Corolla Cross is outfitted with a suite of airbags and seatbelts, an anti-lock brake system with electronic brake-force distribution, vehicle stability control, rear cross-traffic alert, a reverse camera, and the Toyota Safety Sense safety system, which adds a pre-collision system, automatic high beam, and lane departure alert, among others.
With both vehicles neck and neck in this round, we’re calling it a tie.
