The GT63 S E Performance is Mercedes-AMG's first hybrid

Mercedes-Benz's performance division has unveiled its first hybrid car, the GT63 S E Performance. The lengthy name sums up a sleek sedan with a four-liter V8 twin-turbo on its front end, a luxurious cabin in its middle, and a battery and electric motor at its rear axle. 

The combination of the GT63 E Performance's V8 engine and electric motor generate a combined 831hp and 1,400Nm of torque. More exciting stats include a standstill-to-100kph time of 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 316kph. For its eco-friendly stat, the GT63 E can travel in full-electric mode for 12 kilometers before the car is charged to a station or household socket.

The GT63 E's Formula 1-inspired hybrid drivetrain brings many benefits, as Mercedes-Benz enumerated. An almost 50-50 weight distribution is brought by the engine and e-motors mounted on either ends of the car. An added boost is given by those e-motors, which offer "high regeneration efficiency." 

As the car's lithium-ion battery's technologies were inspired by the Mercedes-AMG F1 team's racing cars, the battery features high power density, as well as thermal cooling. Basically, these technologies promise to keep the battery at its peak condition and performance.

And the GT63 E's performance can be configured, depending on the driver's mood and driving conditions, from the selection of driving modes: Electric, Comfort, Sport and Sport +, Race, Slippery, and Individual. Each driving mode gives its own tune of the car's suspension and power delivery, among others.  

For energy regeneration, the GT63 E can achieve such when it stops itself to a halt as the driver takes off his or her foot from the accelerator. The regen-braking becomes stronger as it goes up its three levels, and its automatically switched on when Race mode is selected. 

On the topic of braking, the GT63 E packs ceramic high-performance composite brakes, with bronze-colored six-piston fixed calipers at the front, and one-piston floating calipers at the rear is fitted as standard. These are paired to the carbon-ceramic brake discs that measure 17 inches at front, 15 inches at the rear. 

The brake systems, which can be seen behind the range of 20- to 21-inch wheels, promise to give short braking distances, as well as maximum stability and fade-resistance under heavy use. The brake's lightweight material saves additional weight. 

In the leather-lined cabin, the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) multimedia displays AMG hybrid-specific functions. These functions include the power flow of the entire drive system, rpm, output, torque and temperature of the electric motor, as well as the temperature of the battery.
