Toyota looks to spice things up for its best-selling hybrid sedan, the Prius. According to Toyota North America, the 2022 Toyota Prius will get the Nightshade treatment.
What this means is that the four-door hybrid will be treated to an all-black body kit comprised of black headlight accents, mirror caps, door handles, color-keyed rear deck spoiler, and shark fin antenna. In addition, the Nightshade Edition Prius will have 17-inch five-spoke alloy wheels — paired with black inserts and lug nuts, of course.
Inside, the Nightshade Edition Prius features standard SofTex-trimmed, heated, power-adjustable front seats that go well with the SofTex-trimmed heated steering wheel.
A semi-gloss black center console houses a seven-inch touchscreen display that’s compatible with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Amazon Alexa. The infotainment system is linked to a six-speaker JBL sound system.
Furthermore, the infotainment system features two 2.1-amp USB charge ports, a Qi wireless phone charging tray that accommodates larger phones, and one 12-volt power outlet.
Additional technology features include advanced voice recognition, Bluetooth hands-free phone capability, phone book access and music streaming, Siri Eyes Free, and an integrated backup camera display.
The Nightshade Edition Prius also comes with a 4.2-inch color Dual Multi-Information Display with Energy Monitor and Hybrid System Indicator with Eco Score, Eco Savings Record, Drive Monitor, Eco Wallet, and Eco Diary features. Climate control, driver support systems, audio system content, and navigation system can also be displayed on the multi-information screen.
Under the hood, the pitch-black Prius sports a combination of a high-efficiency 1.8-liter four-cylinder Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine and two motor-generators through an electronically controlled planetary-type continuously variable transmission (CVT).
The aforementioned US-spec model is offered in two trims: front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD-e). The former is EPA estimated at 54 city/50 highway/52 combined MPG while the latter is rated at an EPA estimated 51 city/47 highway/49 combined MPG.
Toyota’s AWD-e Nightshade Edition Prius rides on 15-inch wheels.
Safety-wise, the US-spec Nightshade Edition Prius comes with industry-leading features like Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), and Smart Stop Technology (SST).
It also comes packed with the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 (TSS-2.0) that provides the hybrid sedan with additional safety features like pre-collision system with low-light pedestrian detection, full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, bicyclist detection, lane departure alert, automatic high beams, and road sign assist.
While the highlight of the Nightshade package is its achromatic hue, Toyota’s arm in the States will offer the Nightshade Edition Prius in three colors: Midnight Black Metallic, Super White, and Silver Metallic.
We’d love to see Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation (TMP) bring the dark-hued hybrid to local dealerships, or at least offer something similar. The Prius we have is the 1.8 hybrid fitted with a 16-valve, Hybrid Synergy Drive, Variable Valve Timing-Intelligent (VVTi), four-cylinder in-line DOHC, engine.
It may not be as cool as the North American Nightshade Edition Prius, but it does come in a glossy color paint TMP calls "Attitude Black."
