The Toyota Yaris is one of the brand’s entries into the local compact car segment. Over the years, the Yaris has had several transformations leading to the hot hatch we have today.
At the front, the current-gen Yaris sports either a four-bulb halogen or a three-tier LED headlamp. It also has LED fog lamps and, depending on the variant, LED DRLs that flank its frowning honeycomb grille. The rear can come with either bulb-type or LED combination lamps although both the available variants are equipped with an LED high-mount stop lamp integrated at the hatchback’s discreet rear spoiler.
The Toyota Yaris rides on 15-inch alloy wheels.
Inside, the Yaris offers seats in fabric or synthetic leather, a urethane or leather steering wheel, a segmented multi-information display with an Optitron meter cluster, and a 6.75-inch infotainment system.
Power comes from either a 1.3-liter or 1.5-liter engine, both mated to a CVT.
In terms of safety, the Toyota Yaris impresses with SRS airbags, seatbelts, ABS with brake assist and EBD, vehicle stability control, hill-start assist, as well as an alarm and an immobilizer.
Currently, TMP offers the Toyota Yaris in two variants: the 1.3 E CVT and the 1.5 S CVT. They are priced at P973,000 and P1,114,000 respectively.
Those who want a hatchback that features elegant styling can find one in the new Mazda2. This version of the Mazda2 adopts the brand’s Evolved Kodo design philosophy and boasts a sleek new look that never goes out of style.
At the front are LED headlamps with auto-leveling functions and LED DRLs. Together, they flank the new front bumper and the Mazda2’s stylish-looking grille. The rear echoes its refined front end.
Compared to the Toyota Yaris, the Mazda2 is equipped with slightly larger 16-inch alloy wheels.
The cabin of the Mazda2 offers a similarly sophisticated design. Here you’ll find dark blue leather seats, a leather-wrapped shift knob, and a leather steering wheel. Its instrument cluster features both digital and analog gauges as well as a seven-inch infotainment system.
Under the bonnet is a 1.5-liter mill mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with Sport mode.
Safety-wise, the Mazda2 comes with airbags and seatbelts, ABS with ABD, dynamic stability control, a rearview camera, and rear parking sensors. The Mazda I-ActiveSense adds smart city brakes support, lane departure warning, driver attention alert, blind-spot monitoring, and rear-cross traffic alert.
The Mazda2 is only offered in a single variant in the Philippines and is priced at P1,195,000.
The Honda Jazz is yet another option for those looking to get their hands on a proper hatchback. Depending on the variant, you can get either multi-reflector halogen or LED headlamps, LED DRLs, and a set of fog lights. The rear gets LED taillamps and a high-mount stop lamp.
An RS variant is also available and comes with a suite of body kits with RS badging.
Depending on the variant, the Honda Jazz can be had with either 15 or 16-inch wheels.
Inside, the Honda Jazz gets black fabric seats (black fabric with orange stitching for the RS variant) and a urethane or leather steering wheel. It also features analog gauges and a digital trip meter. The Honda Jazz is fitted with a seven-inch infotainment system.
Under the hood of the Honda Jazz is a 1.5-liter engine mated to a CVT.
When it comes to safety, the Honda Jazz features airbags and seatbelts, ABS with EBD, vehicle stability assist, hill-start assist, a reverse camera, a security alarm, and an immobilizer.
The Honda Jazz is currently offered in three variants priced from P918,000 to P1,090,000. However, it has been discontinued locally. Once the stocks run out, that's it.
