Toyota has launched the latest version of the Hilux GR Sport.
The newest edition of the pick-up truck’s range topping variant, which had its world premiere in Australia, now comes with more power, wider tracks, tuned suspension and bigger disc brakes.
According to Toyota, the 2023 Hilux GR Sport “builds on the renowned durability and rough-road performance of the core model with its tough Dakar-inspired design, intuitive handling and powerful driving performance” and benefits from the "Gazoo Racing’s motorsport experience.”
Powering the new Toyota Hilux GR Sport is the 2.8-liter, four-cylinder, double overhead cam 1GD-FTV (Hi) diesel engine that can deliver peak output of 221 horsepower and 550 Nm of torque (10-percent higher than the outgoing version). The increase in power is attributed to its revised turbo-supercharging and fuel-injection control.
The new Toyota Hilux GR Sport’s power mill is matched to an automatic gearbox (with paddle shifters on the steering wheel) and an expanded lock-up area that ensures confidence for accelerating and overtaking in all conditions.
Further, the pick-up offering features wider tracks (1,655 millimeters [mm> in the front and 1,705mm for the rear) with revamped wishbones and a reinforced rear axle. In addition, the new Toyota Hilux GR is equipped with dedicated monotube shock absorbers with higher damping force and heat-dissipation capacity, stiffer coil springs and an optimal front-rear suspension balance.
On the outside, the new Toyota Hilux GR Sport is fitted with Dakar-inspired design, as shown in the satin-black over-fenders that are integrated into the bumper.
The strong upright grille comes with the signature GR grille mesh and the huge Toyota lettering.
Making the vehicle more offroad-worthy are the 17-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tires, skid plate, rock rails and red rear recovery points.
For its interior, the new Toyota Hilux GR Sport welcomes occupants with its monochromatic black theme, complemented by the bright sports pedals and red seat belts.
Aside from the exterior badges, the GR branding can be seen on the steering wheel, headrests, red brake calipers, as well as on the embossed into the tub-liner.
Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said the new model will reinforce the unbreakable bond Australians have with Hilux. "Hilux GR Sport draws on the spirit of Toyota's Dakar success as a hardcore 4WD that will appeal to customers seeking the quintessential off-road version of Australia's best-selling vehicle," Hanley was quoted as saying noting that the model has been designed to turn heads with its aggressive in-your-face styling that is “reinforced by a healthy performance boost, enhanced high-speed handling and even better grip on dirt roads."
"Thanks to the extensive involvement of our local designers and engineers, HiLux GR Sport is a fun-to-drive vehicle that will bring new capabilities and excitement to the adventure lifestyles of Australian customers," he added.
The official launch of the new Toyota Hilux GR Sport in Australia is expected during the second half of 2023.
To recall, the Toyota Hilux GR-S was launched in the country in 2021, alongside the Fortuner GR-S.
