Per Toyota, the increase in its sales is a result of its recovery from the chips shortage, the pandemic, and a strong demand overall. In a statement, the Japanese automaker retailed 4.038 million examples in January-May 2023. Of the aforementioned figures, 3.302 million units were from overseas markets, while 736,177 examples were retailed domestically.

The aforementioned numbers were reached despite the hurdles that it is facing with subsidiaries Daihatsu and Hino.
To recall, Hino admitted to tampering with the emission results of some of the brand’s models while Daihatsu committed procedural irregularities regarding the side impact tests of its models.
Speaking of the Toyota-owned brands, Daihatsu sold 358,038 vehicles from January-May 2023 while Hino retailed 54,315 units during the same period.
For May 2023 alone, Daihatsu sold 57,674 vehicles while Hino sold 10,563 units.
Toyota stated that the sales performance is a result of the recovery from the impact of semiconductor shortages, in addition to a rebound from the impact of the spread of COVID-19 and semiconductor shortages in the previous year.
“Global and overseas production both reached record highs as a result of increased production capacity in each region in response to solid demand… We will continue to carefully monitor the parts supply situation and make every effort to deliver as many vehicles as possible to our customers at the earliest date,” Toyota said in a press release.
