Toyota issues statement regarding Hino’s emission results
Toyota issued a statement yesterday regarding Hino’s alleged “wrongdoings related to applications for engine emissions certification.”
KEY TAKEAWAYS
What Hino truck was affected by the said issue?
Per Toyota, the affected model is the two-ton Dyna (Cargo, Dump). What Japanese branch conducted the Hino site inspection?
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism conducted the on-site inspection.“As the parent company as well as a shareholder of Hino Motors Ltd., we are extremely disappointed that Hino has once again betrayed the expectations and trust of its stakeholders with the revelation of a new round of wrongdoings. Having continued a number of wrongdoings in the area of engine certification, Hino is now in a situation where it is questioned whether the company will be trusted by its stakeholders. Based on this recognition, we will closely watch whether Hino can be reborn as a company worthy of the trust of its stakeholders,” said Toyota Motor Corporation President and Representative Director Akio Toyoda.
According to Toyota, an on-site inspection conducted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and Hino Motors, Ltd. (Hino) reveal that “at some measurement points, the number of emission gas measurements was insufficient when two or more measurements were required,” and that “the deterioration correction values were calculated based on data from a single measurement, whereas these figures need to be calculated based on data of multiple measurements.”
Based on Toyota’s findings about the said incident, the emission data released by Hino could be deemed inaccurate as the truck brand only tested its vehicle engine models, subject to the 2016 emission regulations in Japan, only once when they should have been tested twice.
As a result, Toyota said that Hino, the OEM supplier of the subject vehicles, suspended shipments of the two-ton Dyna (Cargo, Dump), which is currently on sale.
While technical verification by Hino has not identified any possibility that the emission gas regulation values have been exceeded, the company is working on further confirmation, including whether or not any action is required for supposedly affected vehicles that were already sold.
