Toyota will launch a diesel-powered Innova in India — going side by side with the Japanese carmaker’s notable strides toward electrification.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) recently announced that it has commenced bookings for the Toyota Innova Crysta — a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) that has a 2.4-liter diesel engine under the hood paired to a five-speed manual transmission.
This means that the diesel-fed powerplant will continue to be retailed in India following the release of the model's hybrid version in the form of the Innova Hycross there and the Indonesian-market Kijang Innova Zenix.
Performance figures for the Toyota Innova Crysta are yet to be announced, but they could be close to the Philippine-spec Innova, which makes 167 horsepower with 343Nm of torque.
To note, the locally‐available Toyota Innova packs a 2.8-liter mill, which can also be married to a five-speed manual gearbox.
Speaking of the Philippine-market Toyota Innova, it bears a striking resemblance to the Innova Crysta in India that now comes with a brand-new tough and rugged front fascia.
Further, the Toyota Innova Crysta will offer enhanced passenger comfort with rear automatic airconditioning, an eight-way power adjust driver’s seat, seat back table, a thin-film transistor multi-information instrument cluster, leather seats, ambient illumination, and one-touch tumble second-row seats.
Additionally, TKM bared that the Toyota Innova Crysta will come with an available Smart Playcast eight-inch infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Safety features to expect from the MPV include front and rear parking sensors, vehicle stability control, hill-start assist control, an anti-lock braking system, electronic brake-force distribution, and brake assist.
According to TKM, the Toyota Innova Crysta will be offered in four grades: Zx, Vx, Gx, and G.
“The iconic Innova’s journey in India has been dotted with milestones since its launch in 2005. Apart from being an undisputed segment leader, this vehicle, in all its avatars has been immensely appreciated across the country and has cemented the quality, durability, and reliability attributes of Toyota in the Indian market. As we open the bookings for the New Innova Crysta Diesel today, we would like to share with our customers that their favorite MPV is now available in four grades. This vehicle is a perfect choice for customers preferring a rugged and practical vehicle, well known for its unparalleled comfort and safety. With both, the New Innova Crysta and Innova Hycross, now available for booking, across dealers and online, we are happy to say that our customers, who have aspired for their favorite Innova have a choice of multiple powertrains to enjoy their drive.” said TKM Sales and Strategic Marketing Vice President Atul Sood.
In light of Toyota’s move to keep both a gasoline-hybrid and a diesel-powered Innova in its roster in India, it is possible that the same could happen locally as well.
Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) might simply give the current 2.8-liter diesel model a similar face lift — since many Filipino motorists still swear by their diesel-powered automobiles — and probably add a hybrid variant of the MPV segment staple soon.
It can be remembered that the last time TMP gave the Innova a facelift was in 2021. Parokya ni Edgar frontman Chito Miranda and his wife Neri Naig-Miranda, even took the new MPV out for a spin.
