Hot on the heels of its GR-spec Hilux launch last week, Toyota Thailand rolls out yet another GR Sport vehicle. This time, it’s the Toyota Fortuner that gets the Gazoo Racing badge.
According to Toyota’s Thai arm, the Toyota Fortuner GR Sport Edition combines the valuable experience and technical knowledge obtained by the Japanese automotive brand with its flagship pickup passenger vehicle (PPV).
“The developmental concept of the Fortuner GR Sport originated from the sports cars competed in the World Rally Championship (WRC) — high-performance vehicles capable of going places and maneuvering on any terrain, for multi-purpose vehicle drivers who seek an excellent driving performance,” says Toyota Regional Chief Engineer Anyarat Suthibenjakul.
Under the GR-spec Fortuner’s hood is Toyota’s 2.8-liter GD Supwerpower diesel engine (shared by the Thai-spec GR Sport Hilux) which puts out 204hp and 500Nm of torque. Stopping power will come from ventilated disc brakes with a red brake caliper complete with GR branding. Supporting the SUV are double wishbone suspensions at the front and a four-link rear suspension setup with coiled springs, stabilizer bar, and the new monotube shock absorber.
Safety will be provided the Toyota Safety Sense which includes a pre-collision system, lane departure alert, and dynamic radar cruise control. In addition, the Fortuner GR Sport Edition will also have blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
Outside, the Fortuner GR Sport Edition features a newly designed glossy black front grille with the GR emblem, a front bumper with glossy black accessories kit, body-color door handles, newly designed sports-car style rear spoiler, and 20-inch alloy wheels finished in a special color exclusively designed for GR Sport Edition.
The cabin also features a new interior design with plenty of black and red accents akin to the GR brand. GR badges are spread in the interior and are found on the sporty seats (with perforated suede decorated with red thread stitching), the steering wheel (wrapped with perforated leather), the passenger cabin carpet, and the smart ignition system.
Smoke silver accents are also found on the Fortuner GR Sport’s central console, front A/C vent, door panels, shift knob, and shifter console.
“We aim to develop Fortuner to become the leading automobile that integrates all of the best qualities according to its slogan, 'Wisdom of a leader' that resonates with customers of any age who are ambitious and looking for a vehicle that supports their leadership character, possess outstanding qualities in every aspect, ready for any adventure, and the most important thing is that the vehicle serves its value,” said Toyota Motor Thailand Company Limited Executive Vice President Surasak Suthongwan.
The Fortuner GR Sport Edition is offered in Thailand in three color options including Attitude Black Mica, White Pearl (Black Top), and Emotional Red (Black Top). Price starts at TBH1,879,000 for the black-finished SUV while those that come in white and in red will set Thai customers back TBH20,000 more.
