KEY TAKEAWAYS
What does the Scope 3 target involve?
Per Denso, the Scope 3 target involves “indirect emissions, including those from activities not owned or controlled by the reporting organization, but related to its activities.”How does Denso plan to achieve its Scope 3 target?
According to Denso, it plans to achieve its Scope 3 target by providing know-how on conserving energy by communicating closely with suppliers. In a press statement, the Japanese automotive electronics brand said that it has now set Scope 3 as its new target in minimizing the company’s greenhouse gas footprint throughout its supply chain. In addition to its Scope 3 target, Denso announced that it has its eyes on achieving carbon neutrality throughout its entire supply chain by 2050.
As defined and published by Japan’s Ministry of the Environment, Scope 3 involves other “indirect emissions, including those from activities not owned or controlled by the reporting organization, but related to its activities.”
Meanwhile, Scope 1 and Scope 2 deal with “direct emissions of greenhouse gases from activities under the control of the organization, such as fuel combustion and industrial processes” and “indirect emissions resulting from the consumption of purchased electricity, heat, or steam,” respectively.
Per the Aichi-headquartered company, it plans to attain the said target by providing know-how on conserving energy by communicating closely with suppliers, as well as support for addressing issues faced by respective suppliers, such as switching to renewable energy and low-carbon materials.
The said approach, Denso explained, will contribute to reducing the carbon dioxide emissions generated during the manufacturing processes of components and raw materials procured by Denso.
Additionally, by developing products and systems that underpin the widespread use of electric vehicles, including hybrid electric vehicles, batter-electric vehicles, and fuel cell electric vehicles, Denso will work to decrease the carbon dioxide emissions associated with the use of mobility incorporating its products.
Denso also announced that it has finally acquired a certification from the Science Based Targets initiative.
