As the Gazoo Racing (GR) Yaris was launched virtually last July 17, Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) also offered a realistic glimpse of the GR Yaris' capabilities with the GR Track Day.
The hot hatch, presented in TMP and Toyota GR PH's Facebook pages, is now available at 16 Toyota GR dealerships starting on August 14, 2021. The car goes for P2.65 million.
For the money, the Philippine-spec GR Yaris cars will come with a Circuit Package as standard — an optional extra in other markets.
The Circuit Pack brings with it a carbon fiber roof, 18-inch BBS forged alloy wheels wrapped in stickier tires, limited-slip differentials front and rear, sports suspension, and red brake calipers.
Elsewhere, it's the same globally popular Yaris from Toyota's performance arm. The three-cylinder turbocharged 1.6-liter mill's power and torque output are rated at 257hp and 360Nm, which are managed by a six-speed manual transmission.
But the real highlight is the GR Yaris' all-wheel drive (AWD) system, which has been bred in the World Rally Championship (WRC) the Japanese carmaker competes in. That makes the GR Yaris a rally homologation.
The motoring media got to experience the GR Yaris' pace and AWD cornering prowess during the GR Track Day at Clark International Speedway (CIS).
Guided with the intuition of racing driver and Tuason Racing School founder JP Tuason, the participants drove the rally-bred hatch in a series of driving activities.
The activities were a braking test from 70, 80, and 90kph, a slalom course, and two laps of the entire CIS. The 335hp, rear-wheel drive GR Supra, as well as the CVT Vios Cup car, were also sampled in the track event.
The GR Yaris features three driving modes: Normal, Sport, and Track.
In Normal mode, the car distributes the torque to the front and rear wheels with a 60:40 ratio, while a 30:70 split is available in Sport for rally-style skids and slides. The Track mode setting balances the torque evenly between the front and rear axles.
To keep the GR Yaris' four passengers safe, the Toyota Safety Sense is included with its automatic high beam and lane trace assist features, among others. Also part of the safety equipment are six airbags and stability control.
Super White II, Emotional Red, and Precious Black are the GR Yaris color options.
