Toyota Recalls 2.4 Million Hybrid Cars for Stalling Defect

Toyota is recalling a total of 2.4 million gasoline hybrid vehicles in Japan and abroad over an issue which could cause the vehicle to stall.

The recall, which affects Prius and Auris models, covers vehicles manufactured between October 2008 and 2014.

According to Toyota Motor Corp., the recall includes 1.25 million vehicles in Japan, 830,000 in North America, and 290,000 units in Europe. Some vehicles sold in Africa, China, and other markets are also affected.

Toyota described the issue in a statement, saying that in very 'rare' instances, the vehicle could fail to switch to a 'failsafe' driving mode should an error in the hybrid system occur. This can lead to a loss of power and cause the vehicle to stall.

The Japanese automaker said that it is not aware of any road accidents due to the issue.
