Toyota has unveiled the all-new Wigo in Indonesia where it is called the Agya.
After nearly a decade, the Japanese carmaker finally gave the small city car a complete transformation. The second-generation Toyota Wigo now dons a more “powerful and aggressive exterior.”
At the fore is a larger and more distinguished grille that resembles the ones found on the Philippine-market Toyota Vios and Toyota Raize. Further, the front fascia is flanked with somewhat larger (yet thinner) headlights and are paired with what we reckon are either daytime running lights or front fog lamps.
Meanwhile, the side profile of the all-new Wigo gets body-colored door handles and side mirrors, black-colored B-pillars, and rain visors, which probably come as standard for the Indonesian-market Toyota Wigo. The wheel size was not disclosed, but we believe it could be 14 or 15 inches.
As for its rear, well, Toyota Indonesia did not exactly reveal the rear end of the all-new Wigo. However, we assume that it echoes the new aggressive styling the compact city car wears at the front.
Overall, the all-new Wigo is said to be 3,760 millimeters (mm) long, 1,665mm wide, and 1,505mm high. Compared to the currently available Wigo in the Philippines, the all-new model is slightly larger.
Inside, the all-new Wigo features a horizontal design concept, which Toyota Indonesia said gives it a more sophisticated and driver-oriented impression. The local arm of the carmaker explained that the instrument panel and door trim have adopted a 3D texture to give it a sophisticated feel. Meanwhile, the center console and transmission lever were moved higher to maintain better driver ergonomics. Further, the design and layout of the pedals were also changed.
The steering wheel of the all-new Toyota Wigo appears to have controls for audio and sport chrome trims on its three spokes. The instrument panel looks like it combines digital and analog gauges. And as for the infotainment system, it no longer sits flush on the console. Instead, it stands upright on the dashboard.
Toyota seems to have used plenty of hard plastics on the all-new Wigo’s interior, but it’s not surprising as the compact hatch is, after all, an economy car.
Power — for the Indonesian-market model — comes from a 1.2-liter engine mated to a continuously variable transmission. This setup will give Indonesian motorists a maximum power output of 86 horsepower and 112Nm of torque.
For comparison’s sake, the currently available Toyota Wigo in the Philippines puts out 64 horses with 89Nm of pulling power. It’s powered by a 1.0-liter powerplant, which is married to either a five-speed manual gearbox or a four-speed automatic transmission.
“The all-new Agya is a manifestation of Toyota’s commitment to carrying out the vision of continuous improvement for products marketed in Indonesia and presenting ever-better cars to meet growing customer needs, including for sporty seekers and motorsport enthusiasts by providing superior performance and handling to the All-New Agya… In line with the Mobility for All commitment, Toyota is increasing the value that is the advantage of this hatchback by embedding the latest Toyota technology based on a sophisticated concept of a human-centered approach,” said PT Toyota-Astra Motor (TAM) President Director Hiroyuki Ueda.
The Indonesian arm of Toyota also revealed a Gazoofied variant of the all-new Wigo. Even better than the Toyota Racing Development trim Wigo offered here in the Philippines, Toyota Indonesia said that on top of the cosmetic upgrades, the Gazoo Racing (GR) Sport grade also was given “special tuning” to improve the car’s performance and handling.
Additionally, the all-new Toyota GR Sport Wigo gets exclusive shock absorbers and coil springs, a tighter gear ratio, and specially selected sport tires.
“Many prospective customers want a car with better basic quality, advanced features, a sporty appearance, and capable performance,” commented TAM Vice President Director Henry Tanoto.
“To answer this need, in the second generation of Agya, we present not only one but two models at once. For those who are looking for the first car that is exciting and gives peace of mind, we have prepared the all-new Agya. And for sporty seekers, we have prepared the all-new Agya GR Sport, which we have also provided with special tuning in several parts to provide superior performance and handling. We hope that these two models can meet the needs of each segment, in line with our commitment to present Mobility for All,” Tanoto added.
The all-new Toyota Wigo is not yet listed on Toyota Indoniesia’s website. That said, pricing and release date are yet to be revealed. As to when it could land on Philippine shores, many of the nameplate’s fans believe that we could see it in the latter part of the year. Who knows? Toyota Motor Philippines might even bring it to this year’s upcoming motor shows — like the 2023 Manila International Auto Show.
