Volvo Cars has earned a reputation for being one of — if not the — safest car brands in the market. It’s what the Swedish carmaker is proud to be known for and it’s what it has built its brand on. For Volvo Cars, safety is not a marketing exercise or another regulatory hurdle to clear. It is at the core of its purpose as a company.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What kind of state-of-the-art sensors will be fitted to the Volvo EX90?

Per Volvo Cars, the EX90 will be fitted with cameras, radars, and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) scanners.
  • When will Volvo unveil the EX90 EV SUV?

According to Volvo Cars, the all-electric EX90 will make its debut on November 9.
  • The upcoming Volvo EX90 all-electric sport utility vehicle (SUV), per the Gothenburg-based firm, will continue the legacy of safety. Standard safety features that come with the vehicle will be beyond that of any Volvo before it. As it should be, because only innovation can drive us forward and make things better.

“We’ll continue to innovate until cars don’t crash anymore, until we’re 100 percent carbon-free as a company. All in order to protect more lives, in line with our purpose. The EX90 is the start of a new era for Volvo Cars, taking our legacy of safety, quality, and innovation into the future,” Volvo Cars said in a press release.

According to Volvo Cars, the EX90 electric vehicle (EV) SUV comes with an invisible shield of safety that includes the company’s latest sensing technology which allows the vehicle to understand the driver’s state of mind and the world around it.

    The secret — state-of-the-art sensors.

Volvo Cars said that the EX90 SUV will be fitted with cameras, radars, and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) scanners to create a 360-degree real-time view of the world.

Inside are special sensors and cameras, powered by Volvo Cars’ own in-house-developed algorithms, which gauge eye gaze concentration. The technology allows the EX90 to see when the driver is distracted, tired, or otherwise inattentive, beyond what has been possible in a Volvo car to date.

Should the sensors in the Volvo EX90’s cabin notice any of the abovementioned, it will alert the driver, first softly nudging, then more insistent if needed. And if the unthinkable happens and the driver falls asleep or is taken ill while driving, the EX90 is designed to safely stop and call for help.

The LiDAR scanners, on the other hand, tirelessly survey the road ahead, whether it’s day or night, and also at highway speeds. It can also see small objects hundreds of meters ahead, creating more time to inform, act and avoid.

As these cars hit the road, Volvo Cars learn from the data they generate making them smarter and better over time. The company’s research indicates that Volvo Cars’ software and sensors can help reduce accidents that result in serious injury or death by up to 20 percent.

Likewise, Volvo Cars estimate that it can even improve overall crash avoidance by up to nine percent, which could lead to millions of accidents avoided over time. That would be a big step in safety and for mankind.

More information is to be revealed about Volvo Cars’ new all-electric flagship SUV in the coming weeks. Its global reveal is scheduled on November 9, 2022.
