Ford Motors expands its Explorer lineup with the introduction of the Timberline, the most off-road-capable Explorer to date, according to Ford. The buffed-up Explorer SUV is aimed at adventure-seeking weekend warriors.
“Ford is delivering on more capable SUVs with Timberline. Consumer data have shown us that now more than ever, customers want to get outside and explore nature with friends and family,” said Ford Motor Company Americas and International Markets Group President Kumar Galhotra.
“Timberline hits a new sweet spot with these customers who want an ideal combination of passenger space, moderate off-road capability, and great manners around town,” he added.
Some of the features that separate the Ford Explorer Timberline from its SUV stablemates ar increased ground clearance, improved approach and departure angles, steel skid plates, Torsen limited-slip differential, Bridgestone Dueler all-terrain tires, new suspensions, springs, and stabilizer bars.
It will also be equipped with a standard terrain management system that features seven drive modes that drivers can choose from depending on the road conditions.
Powering the Ford Explorer Timberline is the American carmaker’s 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine that generates a maximum power of 300hp and 420Nm of torque. The powertrain is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.
The Ford Explorer Timberline will also sport aesthetic features like blackout treatment around the headlamps and taillamps as well as a black Ford oval that matches the Carbonized Gray grille.
On- and off-trail illumination will be handled by the SUV’s LED foglamps. The front fascia will have provisions for optional dealer-installed Ford Performance auxiliary lights.
Inside, the Ford Explorer Timberline offers a Deep Cypress interior trim to complement the hues of the SUV’s exterior. The green interior tones are paired with a headliner, overhead console, A-, B-, and C-pillar trim, grab handles, visors, and moonroof shade in Ebony.
There are also Timberline badges found all over the SUV.
Safety-wise, Ford’s new Explorer SUV is equipped with Co-Pilot360 and Co-Pilot360 Assist+ technology which includes intelligent adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and speed sign recognition, lane centering, evasive steering assist, voice-activated touch screen navigation, and a 360-degree camera.
Ford is already accepting orders for the Explorer Timberline and is slated to arrive in US dealerships in June.
Locally, Ford Philippines took a slightly similar approach when it boosted the Ford Ranger’s off-road capabilities with Fox performance suspensions through the Ford Ranger FX4 Max.
