Verstappen wins Austrian GP, Hamilton finishes 4th
Verstappen proved unstoppable as he once again took a dominant win. The Honda/Red Bull frontman finished first in the recently held Austrian Grand Prix, which entailed 71 laps around the 4.318-kilometer Red Bull Ring.
“The car was on rails. On every tire we put on it was really enjoyable to drive. Pretty insane. I’m a bit amazed myself how today went. I didn’t expect it to be like this.” said Max Verstappen.
The Dutchman also claimed an extra point in the Austrian GP as he recorded the race’s fastest lap at 1:06.200.
As Austria eases its COVID-19 restrictions, fans of the Red Bull racer — often referred to as the “orange army” — flocked to the motorsport race track in Spielberg, Styria, Austria to show their support for Verstappen.
Verstappen acknowledged their presence when he was interviewed at the Sunday press conference after the race.
“It was insane today to see all the fans here first of all and of course so much orange, it was just incredible. A great motivation as well, especially on the last lap, the in-lap, there was a lot of orange all over the track, so yeah, thank you very much for coming,” he said.
Max Verstappen seizes his 15th career win as the Austrian GP comes to a close. He is 32 points ahead of Hamilton in the World Championship.
“It is still so long and there are still a lot of points you need to score. We need to make sure that every single weekend we are back up there and we basically use the whole potential of the car. We had a good car here in Austria especially, I think it was just very dominant, but we have to make sure that in Silverstone we are there again and that’s what we will look into now again to make sure we are very competitive there,” commented Verstappen.
His long-time rival, on the other hand, finished fourth behind McLaren/Mercedes racer, Lando Norris.
