Volkswagen Golf R '20 Years' sets brand's new Nürburgring-Nordschleife lap record

Volkswagen announced that the new Golf R “20 Years” has set a new record at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife — one of the most infamous sections of the famed German racetrack.

The record: not the fastest car in the longer North section, but the fastest Volkswagen R model of all time in Nordschleife.

According to the Wolfsburg-based automotive brand, the VW Golf R “20 Years” clocked an official lap time of 7:47.31 minutes, faster by four seconds than the current Golf R.

The feat was achieved thanks to the Volkswagen Golf R “20 Years” 2.0-liter, four-cylinder, turbocharged engine that makes the special-edition model the most dynamic Volkswagen R of all time on The Green Hell’s north loop. The power mill is mated to a seven-speed gearbox.

The setup produces about 328 horsepower (hp), a top speed of 270 kilometers per hour (kph), and reaches zero to 100kph in as fast as 4.6 seconds.

In addition, the special Golf R is fitted with a host of extensive standard equipment including an intelligent combination of the R-Performance package, Vehicle Dynamics Manager, and R-Performance Torque Vectoring.

Touring car race driver and Volkswagen R development driver Benjamin Leuchter drove the VW Golf R “20 Years” on the 20,832-kilometer (km) racetrack.

“With this car, I can drive here on the Nürburgring and the next stop is then the baker’s or the DIY store. The vehicle is really an all-rounder that can do everything,” Leuchter was quoted as saying.
