Volkswagen shares design sketches for Chinese-spec ID. Aero

Volkswagen is paying close attention to one of its strongest markets, China. Not only is the automotive brand restructuring its leadership and management model in the region but it is also looking to produce new models that are specifically designed for its Chinese customers.

On that note, Volkswagen has released concept sketches of its first fully-electric limousine for the Chinese automobile market — the ID. Aero.

The Volkswagen ID. Aero will expand the brand’s ID. family. It will target the upper-middle class car buyers in China and allow Volkswagen to further its electric offensive within the framework of the Accelerate strategy.

Since the ID. Aero is still a pre-production study, not much has been established in terms of features and specifications. However, Volkswagen did confirm that the electric limo will be built on Volkswagen’s Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB), just like all the models in the VW ID. family.

Likewise, the ID. Aero will feature the unmistakable design language of the ID. family as seen in the precise and flowing lines of the teased concept art. Particularly striking features of the pre-production study are the aerodynamic front and roof, which help to reduce energy consumption and increase range.

Volkswagen said that it will stage a digital world premiere for the pre-production study next week. The ID. Aero is expected to go on sale in China in the second half of 2023. Also happening in 2023 is the presentation of the North American and European models of the ID. Aero.
