In a recent press release, Volkswagen announced the upcoming world debut of the ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo. After five years, the concept vehicles are now ready for full production and are prepared to showcase what VW calls “an electric motoring game-changer” on March 9.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is the electric powertrain setup of the VW ID. Buzz?

The ID. Buzz features a 150kW electric motor paired with a high-voltage lithium-ion battery that makes around 200 horses with 310Nm of torque.
  • When will the ID. Buzz make its debut?

The VW ID. Buzz will make its global debut on March 9, 2022.
  • When will it be available?

The ID. Buzz wil be available in Europe in the fourth quarter of the year.
  • According to the German automotive brand, its commercial vehicle division (Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles) is currently going through the final phase of trials of the ID. Buzz prototypes. The pre-production fleet is said to be touring Europe and will complete final test runs under everyday conditions between Barcelona, Paris, London, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Hamburg, and Hannover.

“Before we start full production of the ID. Buzz, these final trials with vehicles practically matching the ultimate full-production specification provide us with indispensable input for the final fine-tuning,” said Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Head of Vehicle Development Kai Grünitz.

Two models will be made available: the five-seater ID. Buzz and the three-seater Buzz Cargo van. Both versions feature stylistic elements of the OG Bulli including extremely short vehicle body overhangs, maximum utilization of space on a minimal footprint, the classic division of the vehicle body design into an upper and lower level, plus the unmistakable face with its V-shape.

Powering the ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo is a 150kW electric motor paired with a high-voltage lithium-ion battery. Both passenger and cargo models have an electronically limited top speed of 145kph and produce around 200 horses with 310Nm of torque.

The battery has a “Plug & Charge” function that allows it to authenticate itself at various quick-charging stations allowing for a more convenient way of juicing up. VW also announces a new feature called "bi-directional charging." The Wolfsburg-based automotive brand explains that this feature will allow owners “to store excess power from a home’s own solar panels in the ID. Buzz and to feed it back into the home in the evening in order to be independent even without the sun.”

Other features confirmed for the ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo includes software over-the-air capabilities and driver-assist systems such as Trained Parking, Car2X, and the latest version of Travel Assist.

Per VW, production of the ID. Buzz starts in the first half of 2022 with its European launch following just a short time later in the autumn (from September to December).
