Volkswagen to release limited-run Golf R 20th Anniversary Edition in North America

Volkswagen has confirmed that 1,800 units of the Volkswagen Golf R 20th Anniversary Edition will be allocated for the North American market. The special-edition vehicle will not only offer a suite of unique exterior and interior appointments but also celebrates 20 years of high-performance all-wheel-drive Golf vehicles.

“Twenty years is a significant milestone for the R performance brand of models, and we’re excited to share in a global celebration of two decades of R32 and Golf R heritage. Being the first official worldwide special model for the Golf R, it was important to include our North American Volkswagen performance hatch enthusiasts in this birthday party for the Golf R brand,” said Volkswagen Product Marketing and Strategy Senior Vice President (SVP) Hein Schafer.

At a glance, the Volkswagen Golf R 20th Anniversary Edition is unmistakably sporty. The mirror caps are finished in either Lapiz Blue or gloss black, depending on the color of the vehicle; the puddle lights, project “20 R” onto the pavement below; the “R” logos on the front and rear bumpers, as well as on the fender, are finished in blue; and the B-pillars get 20th Anniversary badges.

The Volkswagen Golf R 20th Anniversary Edition loses its standard sunroof to gain lighter weight and a more streamlined roofline. It also rides on Gloss Black 19-inch Estoril wheels wrapped with summer performance tires.

Inside, the Volkswagen Golf R 20th Anniversary Edition gets carbon fiber accents on the dash panel and front door trim. It also comes with an ergonomically optimized D-shaped steering wheel with a blue “R” logo and supportive high-bolster sports seats. Its key fob also has a blue “R” logo.

Under the hood of the Volkswagen Golf R 20th Anniversary Edition is a turbocharged 315-horsepower (hp) EA888 evo4 TSI engine mated to either a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The Volkswagen Golf R 20th Anniversary Edition will be available in the US later this year and will have a sticker price of US$44,940 (about P2.5 million) for the manual transmission model and US$45,740 (around P2.6 million) for the 7-speed DSG.
