Volvo invests in Bcomp for sustainable lightweight materials
Seeing how the Bcomp-fitted Volvo Cars Concept Recharge was able to cut down its emission ratings, the Gothenburg-based automotive brand, through its venture capital arm Volvo Cars Tech Fund, has announced its investment in the Swiss firm Bcomp.

Based on Bcomp’s calculations, the Volvo Cars Concept Recharge was able to generate up to 62 percent lower CO2 emissions thanks to the natural fiber-based composites that are 50 percent lighter compared to regular plastic.
“We’re very encouraged by the possibilities offered by flax composites, which is why we used them both in the interior and on the exterior of the Volvo Cars Concept Recharge. It is a material that is environmentally responsible with a very low carbon footprint that also delivers an attractive and natural aesthetic,” said Volvo Cars Design Senior Vice President Robin Page.
Volvo Cars said that it is actively exploring the use of natural fiber composites for its next generation of pure electric cars and that Bcomp’s flax fiber, bio-based lightweight products align with Volvo Cars’ goals.
Furthermore, Volvo’s strategic affiliate, Polestar, also aims to use Bcomp’s materials in forthcoming models.
Financial details of the Volvo Cars Tech Fund investment in Bcomp were not disclosed.
