Despite the massive setback that the entire automotive industry experienced due to COVID-19, it appears car makers are slowly but surely regaining their traction.
Last month, Volvo Cars sold a total of 61,483 units, as sales in the US returned to normal and markets in China and Europe both continued their positive trends.
However, the total number of vehicles sold went down 2.1 percent from last June 2019, which saw the Swedish car brand sell off 62,775 total cars.
Likewise, sales numbers for the first half of the year went down 20.8 percent as opposed to last year's figures. Volvo sold only 269,962 vehicles from January to June this year.
On a more positive note, Volvo's sales in the US market went higher than last year at 10,385 cars, as many businesses reopened and a car-buying frenzy ensued post-lockdown. During the first six months however, US sales declined by 13.7 percent to 43,255 cars, compared with the same period a year ago.
China is also another strong market for Volvo, as sales continuously grew year-over-year during the month, reaching 15,105 units sold. Likewise, the numbers also increased by 14.1 percent from June 2019's figures. However, from January to June 2020, sales declined by 3.0 percent, as opposed to the sales figures collected from January to June 2019.
In Europe, sales figures kept showing signs of recovery for the entire June. Sales in the continent reached up to 28,277 cars for the whole month, down 6.5 percent versus the same month in 2019. In the first six months of the year, sales declined by 29.5 percent year-on-year.
The XC60 was the company’s top selling model during the first six months of 2020, with total sales of 78,761 cars (from 2019's 97,203 cars), followed by the XC40 with 68,359 cars (from 61,864 cars in 2019) and the XC90 with 37,918 cars (from 2019's 47,818 cars).
In the first six months, the share of Volvo Cars’ Recharge line-up of chargeable Volvo models more than doubled, compared with the same period last year. Recharge is the overarching brand name for all chargeable Volvo models with a fully electric or plug-in hybrid powertrain.
