Volvo Cars announced that both the mild hybrid XC90 and XC90 Recharge plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) recently received the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) 2023 Top Safety Pick+ (TSP+) honors.
To note, the honors came after IIHS implemented more strict requirements for vehicles to achieve the organization’s Top Safety Pick (TSP) and TSP+ awards.
On the non-profit vehicle safety organization's website, both sport utility vehicles scored a “Good” rating in its crashworthiness tests: small overlap front (driver-side), small overlap front (passenger-side), moderate overlap front (original test), side (original test), side (updated test), roof strength, and head restraints and seats.
Similarly, the two models earned an “Acceptable” rating in the headlights test; a “Superior” rating in the daytime front crash prevention (vehicle-to-pedestrian) test; and an “advanced” rating in the nighttime front crash prevention (vehicle-to-pedestrian) test.
And while both vehicles got an “Acceptable” rating in the Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) ease of use test, the mild hybrid Volvo XC90 received a “Good” rating in the seatbelt reminders test.
“The Volvo XC90 continues to prove, year after year, that it is among the safest vehicles on the road,” said Volvo Cars Safety Center Head Åsa Haglund.
