Today, carmakers take a more different approach to basic transportation than they did, say, 10 years ago. To satisfy the needs and wants of consumers, even entry-level cars are given the styling and features previously exclusive to more expensive metal.
That's what Toyota did to its Wigo, particularly when it updated the country's best-selling city hatchback in 2020. The Wigo now wears a more aggressive front end and machine-cut alloy wheels, among others. In TRD S guise, front and rear aprons and side skirts give the humble car a hot-hatch appearance.
Despite the car's size, its interior shows that small doesn't mean spartan. There are four variants of the tiny Toyota, the E, G MT and AT, and TRD S, which go from P568,000 to P700,000.
Interior amenities
The Wigo E features a standard 2DIN audio with auxiliary, Bluetooth, and USB connectivity. The aircon is controlled via manual knobs.
Entering the Wigo G's cabin, via keyless entry, will reveal the significant features in the recent update: new touchscreen infotainment that's linked to tiller switches, push button aircon controls, and push button start.
The touchscreen is equipped with the same connectivity options as in the E trim. and the aircon controls surround an LCD screen that shows the fan speed and AC temperature. Through the push button start, the Wigo's sole one-liter three-cylinder engine option can be switched on or off.
G and TRD S cars share these equipment, as well as the button to automatically fold the side mirrors. That's a gadget used to be reserved for premium rides.
On the other hand, what's reserved for the Wigo TRD S is the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto mirroring abilities of its infotainment, which can also be controlled via voice command.
Safety kit
Standard on the Wigo range are airbags for the driver and passenger, reversing sonars, as well as ABS.
Upgrading to the G and TRD S will bring a reversing camera to the safety kit, while the fully loaded car has been fitted with a dashboard camera. These two varieties also share an immobilizer and alarm and remote locking.
