World’s Safest Truck Mercedes-Benz Actros Made Safer with Active Brake Assist 2
Daimler has announced that it is releasing a better version of its truck, the Actros, in the country. Dubbed as the "World's Safest Truck," the luxury brand raises the bar even higher with the introduction of the second-generation Active Brake Assist.
Auto Nation Group, Inc. (ANG), the company behind the distribution of Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles in the country, recently unveiled the new and improved Actros during a live demonstration at the Freeport Zone of Clark Air Base Pampanga last April 24. The live demo was designed to showcase how the new Active Brake Assist 2 would work in various pre-collision situations on the road.
About the Active Brake Assist 2
Whereas the first Active Brake Assist only applied the brakes when it detects a risk of a head-to-tail collision with a slow-moving obstacle in front of the vehicle, the second generation also activates if it detects a stationary obstacle. The new system uses a radar that scans an area of 1-200 m in the lane ahead of the truck while continuously determining the distance to a vehicle in front or a stationary obstacle as well as the difference in speed between the two vehicles. If, based on the current driving style, an accident is unavoidable, the driver is warned by two signals, the first of which is a visual warning in the form of a red triangle that lights up, and the second is an audible alarm. If the situation worsens, the system responds by applying the brakes.
Mercedes-Benz began installing Active Brake Assist in its trucks back in 2006. It is the latest of a long list of safety features that were introduced to the world by Mercedes-Benz trucks, which include anti-lock braking system, acceleration skid control, disc brakes all round, electronically controlled braking system, high-pressure braking system, Brake Assist, Lane Assistant, roll control, and proximity control.
A decisive advantage
The 2nd-gen Active Brake Assist holds two particular advantages over other systems being developed. First, it functions superbly under all weather conditions. Second, it is effective across a truck’s entire speed range, from 0 km/h or slow driving at brisk walking pace to motor way speeds of up to 89 kph (with activated speed limiter)
"We are proud to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the second generation of Active Brake Assist and how it can further help prevent accidents and collisions," said Don Ramos, assistant vice president for commercial vehicles of ANG. "We at Auto Nation Group would like to strengthen the presence of the safest truck in the world, the Mercedes-Benz Actros, in our country to make our roads even safer."
"The Actros is by itself a safe and modern truck. With the second generation of Active Brake Assist, truck drivers, passengers, and other motorists on the roadare assured of safer roads because of this risk-mitigating technology. Mercedes-Benz puts a premium on safety, and you can expect that we will continue to find ways to ensure our vehicles are always safe and reliable," added Ramos.
