BMW 4 Series Coupe

Despite trying to veer away from the 3 Series, its interior continues to borrow design cues from the sedan. In fact, the two are nearly identical on the inside, save for some differences in their door and rear panels.

The BMW 4 Series Coupé has a flat-surfaced dashboard that slopes down for a sleek appearance. Geometric shapes surround everything on the dash. Lower trims come with Sensotec leather upholstery while higher trims are treated with Vernasca leather. Either way, you get a cabin that feels premium and gentlemanly.

Behind the three-spoke steering wheel is a digital instrument cluster similar to the latest 8 Series Coupé. The center dashboard gets a larger 8.8-inch iDrive infotainment system with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The sport seats up front have bolstered sides to provide extra support during high-speed drives. Meanwhile, the rear bench has a 2+1 configuration which allows room for 2 adults and the occasional extra passenger on short trips. The trunk isn’t sizeable but it offers 440 liters of cargo space.

Inspired by classic BMW models such as the 328 and E9 Coupé, the new 4 Series has a massive kidney grill that starts at the hood and extends all the way to the apron. It is flanked by a pair of slim headlights, deeply wedged carbon fiber air intakes, and extra apertures.

There’s a lot going on at the front. Thankfully, the fluid lines and curved corners create a balance of sleek and sporty. This look is carried over to the sides with its deep character lines, sexy roofline, 18-inch wheels, and fenders that don’t bulge out too much. At the back are a boxy bumper, dual exhaust pipes, and the same wraparound taillights as the flagship 8 Series.

Overall, the M Sport Pro is more intimidating than the base model. It has 19-inch wheels, a meaner front lip, larger air intakes, and a rear spoiler.

The BMW 4 Series Coupé is agreeable on the road. It has highly responsive steering which makes for an effortless drive. Stiffer suspensions enable it to tackle corners with accuracy.

The ride feels firm with or without the adaptive dampers, though opting for the package makes it more stable. Switching to Sport mode at high speeds, or Comfort when the road is bumpy will further improve the experience.

Under the hood is a 2.0L twin-turbo gas mill mated to an 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. The base M Sport delivers 184 hp and 300 Nm of torque, while M Sport Pro churns out 258 hp and 400 Nm of torque.

Both models have top speeds of 240 and 250 kmph, respectively, and have a combined fuel efficiency of 16 to 17 kmpl.

Cruise control and driving assistance features such as collision warning, lane departure, and lane change warning are standard to the 4 Series. Some of which are integrated with brake intervention. Only the higher-spec M Sport Pro is equipped with sports brakes. However, the regular ones are adequate for the base model.

Once you get past its grill, the BMW 4 Series Coupé is fun and practical to own. It has everything you will ever need for city driving, including space for groceries and some luggage, plus seats for up to 5 people.

It’s a nice option for young professionals, couples, and small families who want the racecar to feel around bends, without compromising their safety.
