Step inside the cabin and the modern feel continues with the jet black color scheme with just a hint of chrome trim accents. The highlight of the dashboard would be the 7-inch center-mounted infotainment system that is not standard for most B segment sedans. But for the Spark, the touchscreen system even boasts of mobile integration which means it comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability and is partnered to a 6-speaker sound system. All seats are manually adjusted with the rear seat a 40/60 split-folding bench so it can be reconfigured if the limited cargo space at the back is not enough.

At first glance, the Spark looks just like any other hatchback you typically see on the market. There’s the rounded front bumper with a dual crease on both sides. The dual front grille with chrome trim detail adds a sporty and modern feel to the design. Swept-back headlights are accompanied by LED daytime running lights if you are buying the flagship variant. For the other two models, there’s the halogen-bulb DRLs. The crease design continues on the side of the car for better aerodynamics. While at the back is a rear spoiler with integrated stop lamp, rubber duck antenna, and massive taillights. This Chevy compact hatch measures 3,635 mm in overall length, 1,595 mm wide, 1,483 mm tall, and has a wheelbase length of 2,385 mm.

One of the main advantages of Spark is effortless driving. Built for the urban jungle, this subcompact car from Chevy takes little effort when navigating narrow alleys, crowded lanes, and tight parking spots which makes city driving a little less stressful. Equipped with a MacPherson Strut and compound crank suspension system, the Chevrolet Spark can easily take on uneven paved roads and potholes. However, because of its limited cargo space, limited legroom at the back, and narrow seats, it is not ideal to take this hatch for cross country rides.

Under the hood of the Chevrolet Spark is a 1.4-liter DOHC Euro 4 compliant gasoline engine with a 1,399cc displacement that delivers 98 hp of output at 6,200 rpm and peak torque of 128 Nm at 4,400 rpm. The engine uses a chain-driven valvetrain and multipoint fuel injection for its fuel system. The engine is mated to either a continuous variable transmission or a 5-speed manual transmission. All Spark variants are front-wheel drive (FWD). When it comes to fuel economy, this compact hatch is not too impressive. It clocks in 29 mpg or 12 km/ L for city driving and 38 mpg or 16 kmpl for highway driving, for a combined driving rate of 33 mpg or 14 kmpl. This hatchback may not be a gas guzzler but it’s not turbocharged nor supercharged either.

When it comes to safety, the Chevrolet Spark offers the typical ventilated disc and drum brake combination. But when it comes to safety, this Chevy hatch offers a bit more than other subcompact car brands. And that’s true even for the base model. The entry-level Spark LT 1.4L MT is equipped with dual front SRS airbags, ISOFIX, anti-lock braking system, power door locks with speed-sensing, auto, and drive away lock, anti-theft system, and engine immobilizer. The Spark LT 1.4L CVT and flagship Spark Premier 1.4L CVT, on the other hand, have additional security and driver-assist features such as the traction control system, electronic stability control, and hill start assist. These technologies are seldom seen on subcompact cars but are available on Chevrolet Spark.

The Chevrolet Spark competitive price point coupled with generous standard features that makes it a great value for your money. However, if you intend to use it for long drives and out of town trips, then the Spark is not your best candidate. But if you are looking for a compact car that will primarily be driven within the city, then the Spark is an optimal candidate. The small size and safety features lessen driver fatigue and make it a smart choice for both newbie and experienced drivers.
