GAC GS8 Review
-
GAC GS8 Overview
The GS8 is a strong competitor in the popular midsize SUV segment. The GS8 is GAC’s mid-size SUV offering. Compared to the GS4, this model is significantly bigger, boxier, and follows the more muscular style language of most SUVs. And because it’s a much larger vehicle, third-row seating is available for more passengers and added cargo space when necessary. Overall, it can accommodate up to seven passengers including the driver. The Chinese carmaker has always been eager to distinguish themselves from other Chinese auto brands by outfitting their models with original premium touches and details--they even hired a former designer from Mercedes-Benz especially for this vehicle. The GS8 is definitely a testimony to their ambitions with its refreshing design and its advanced features.

GAC GS8 Interior
The cabin of the GS8 is certainly looking to impress. The interior of the model took pointers from luxury SUV styling thanks to its light color motifs, leather touches, and features for comfort and convenience. The dashboard sports clean, flowing lines as well as a large 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth and USB as well as wireless phone charging. GAC was also very generous with legroom for the rear seats thanks to its long wheelbase and rear doors. Even the third row is still pretty spacious for adult passengers. Advanced features include keyless entry with push start button, three-zone automatic air conditioning system, electrically adjustable seats as well as a sunroof.

GAC GS8 Exterior
The muscular shape of the GS8’s body makes it appear more rugged compared to GAC’s other SUV offerings. Everything about this vehicle is big, such as the massive upright grille on the front fascia which the carmaker has dubbed as “flying dynamic.” Flanking this are large bulging headlight clusters. The vehicle also sports broad shoulders and blacked-out rear pillars. Because the GS8 is a boxy car, it has done away with the ladder frame that one can typically find in traditional SUVs. Similar to its original Trumpchi moniker back in native China, it includes the GAC’s signature ‘G’ emblems on the wheels, the grille, and the rear. Overall, this model is just a bit smaller compared to the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 and somewhere nearer to the size of the Hyundai Santa Fe. Unfortunately, ground clearance isn’t very generous at only 200m for an SUV.

GAC GS8 Ride & Handling
Despite using a gasoline engine, the GS8 manages to perform energetically on city drives while still retaining a smooth ride experience despite its large body. Even when cruising on the highway at 100 kmph, the engine remains quiet and nimble. The transmission is also fluid even when caught in city traffic, and is incredibly responsive when during demanding driving situations. While vehicles of this size can be difficult to maneuver on tight turns, the GS8 manages to be quick and precise even on 90-degree corners. The sensors and rear camera also make the vehicle easy to park. However, one downside would have to be its subpar fuel economy. And because the engine is relatively smaller compared to most large engines found in SUVs, you will have to rev it a bit more. A modern turbodiesel could have been more ideal for the GS8.
-
GAC GS8 Engine & Fuel Consumption
The GS8 is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged gasoline mill which generates 199 hp and 320 Nm of torque. This is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The vehicle is a front-wheel-drive only, however, drivers can still opt for either a two-wheel drive or a four-wheel drive.
-
GAC GS8 Braking & Safety
The GS8 is equipped with six airbags including both the front and side, a driver’s airbag, a curtain airbag, and a knee airbag. It also has standard safety features such as an anti-lock braking system with electronic brake distribution, stability control, an immobilizer, electronic door locks, lane departure warning, and ISOFIX child seat anchor points. GAC also added some advanced features such as an automatic unlocking mechanism for the doors in the event of a crash.
-
GAC GS8 Verdict
The GAC GS8 is an impressive vehicle and is a departure from the old misconception towards Chinese auto brands regarding quality. With its premium features and excellent ride experience, it’s a strong contender against current SUVs in the local market. One setback might be its gasoline engine which, while still provides excellent performance, could have been upgraded to a turbodiesel engine for the best driving experience. Regardless, it’s still a great SUV and is priced lower than popular crossovers such as the Hyundai Santa Fe and the Ford Explorer. But considering that it is in the same price range as the likes of the Toyota Fortuner, the Mitsubishi Montero Sport, and the Ford Everest, it’s got tough competition. The GAC GS8 starts at P1.88 million.
