Mitsubishi Mirage Review
-
Mitsubishi Mirage Overview
The Mitsubishi Mirage is currently the only hatchback in the company’s lineup not only in the Philippines, but also all over the world. Targeted at entry-level buyers looking for a vehicle with a compact footprint and are on a budget, the Mitsubishi Mirage is being offered in two different variants – one with a manual gearbox and the other with automatic – both of which are available in a single GLX trim.
-
Mitsubishi Mirage Interior
On the inside too, the Mitsubishi Mirage feels very basic and under-equipped, with the cabin having minimal thoughtful design layouts and features onboard.
The three-spoke multi-functional steering wheel looks quite nice with the silver inserts on the spokes, however, the all-analog instrument console with a small LCD screen for odometer, fuel gauge, and gear indicator fails to match the appeal of modern-day clusters in other cars.
The dashboard looks plain jane and the centre console too has been designed plainly, but thankfully, the presence of a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system acts as a measure of saving grace here. There is a small panel for automatic climate control just below the centre console, all of which have got nice looking piano black surrounds.
One area where Mitsubishi Mirage manages to impress is the levels of space on the inside. It is comfortable enough to seat five passengers on board with ease with a sufficient amount of room on offer.
-
Mitsubishi Mirage Exterior
At a time when even the most compact offer is becoming up to date with contemporary design elements and features, the Mitsubishi Mirage almost retains its original form with little changes, which makes it look dated.
The Mitsubishi Mirage has a wide looking front fascia consisting of large sweptback headlamps which are devoid of any modern-day LED elements. The slim chrome grille looks sleek and nice with chrome bordering. The redesigned front bumper with sharp fog lamp inserts does make the otherwise simple looking front end a bit interesting.
The side profile of the Mitsubishi Mirage retains the simplicity of the front end with a basic design, with a very old fashion pattern for the alloy wheels as well. The only highlight which stands out here is the sharp character line flowing from the edge of the Front door to the rear door.
At the rear, the simplicity, or to be precise, the blandness continues with the Mitsubishi Mirage having a pair of basic looking tail lamps and a clean design for the boot lid. All in all, the Mitsubishi Mirage does not appeal to the hearts when it comes to styling and is badly in the need of a design upgrade to make sure it wins the hearts of modern-day buyers.
-
Mitsubishi Mirage Ride & Handling
The Mitsubishi Mirage is fitted with a basic suspension setup of Macpherson struts with coil springs at the front and torsion beam at the rear, and are softly sprung to make it feel comfortable for the short urban rides it is engineered mainly for. The light steering setup too is a boom for city rides and helps the Mirage in giving a low turning radius of 4.6 metres, but it lacks the weight balance for higher speeds which makes it a bit uninspiring to drive.
-
Mitsubishi Mirage Engine & Fuel Consumption
The Mitsubishi Mirage sources its power from a 1.2-litre three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine, which happens to be the smallest and lowest powerful engine in Mitsubishi’s lineup. The engine, which gets both the options of a 5-speed manual and a CVT gearbox, manages to pump out 78 PS of maximum power output and 100 Nm of peak torque output. The engine claims a fuel efficiency of 21 kmpl.
-
Mitsubishi Mirage Braking & Safety
The basicity of the Mitsubishi Mirage is shown in its set of safety features as well, with the hatchback equipped with dual front airbags and brake override system as the only prominent safety features to talk about.
-
Mitsubishi Mirage Verdict
The Mitsubishi Mirage is designed as an average city runabout, and that is evident in its too basic package. The design and equipment list in and out feels too basic and is in the need of a heavy upgrade if it wants to match the expectations of a contemporary buyer. Nevertheless, its spacious cabin and impressive fuel efficiency are reasons enough for an average Joe who has rather fewer expectations from a car.
