UM DSR SM Review

UM DSR SM Overview
The DSR SM is UM’s entry-level offering in the dual-purpose motorcycle category, with traditional off-road styling bits and mechanicals having a touch of those of urban roadsters. The UM DSR SM offers the thrills and feels of riding a supermoto at an accessible price point. The UM DSR SM is being offered in three dual-tone paint schemes – red with black, black with red, and white with orange.
-
UM DSR SM Design
The UM DSR SM has a traditional look of a supermoto with a lean profile and tall stance, making it look like a go-anywhere machine. It takes in a lot of design cues from an off-road dirt bike, which gives it the extrovert appeal that riders of this category of motorcycle look at in the very first place.
At the front, the UM DSR SM welcomes you with its small face at the front, which comprises a small dome-shaped headlamp integrated within a small rakish front fairing. The side edges of the front fairing are fitted with clear lens turn indicators, and just below the entire front fascia, you will find the large beak-shaped front fender attached. To make it look even more purposeful, the front forks come with sporty-looking large fork covers at their lower parts.
As expected, there is a sense of minimalism and ruggedness in the side profile of the UM DSR SM. The fuel tank is a horizontally-laid Y-shaped panel and there are no side body panels, due to which the mechanical parts of the motorcycle such as engine and frame are exposed in all their glory. Like every dual-purpose motorcycle, the UM DSR SM also gets an engine bash plate and a side-mounted under-seat exhaust, however, the design of both of them looks pared down and dated. The motorcycle sits high from the ground, with the ground clearance rated at 250mm. Towards the rear, the UM DSR SM gets sleek and thin-looking body panels, at the back of which sits a small tail lamp cluster with clear lens turn indicators mounted at the top of the rear profile.
The UM DSR SM shares its part digital instrument console with the bigger DSR II. The console has a rounded tachometer on its left and a small LCD panel that reads out speed, fuel level, odometer, trip meters, and gear indicator. For an entry-level dual-purpose motorcycle, the fit and finish levels of UM DSR SM are decent.

UM DSR SM Ride & Handling
While the UM DSR SM is positioned as the most basic motorcycle in the DSR lineup of dual-purpose motorcycles, it gets mechanical hardware superior to a couple of bigger motorcycles in the same lineup. The motorcycle is equipped with inverted telescopic forks at the front and an adjustable mono-shock at the back. A pair of disc brakes – one at the front and one at the rear – serve the braking duties. The bike gets 17-inch spoke wheels as standard on both ends, which are wrapped with soft compound tyres for maximum comfort on urban roads. What surely is going to bother a lot of shorter riders is its tall seat height of 910mm.
-
UM DSR SM Engine & Fuel Consumption
The UM DSR SM gets the smallest engine in the entire DSR lineup of dual-purpose motorcycles from UM. The four-stroke, single-cylinder, 124.2cc engine of the DSR SM is liquid-cooled and is paired to a 6-speed gearbox, making its basic engineering superior to the 200cc engine of the DSR II. The engine produces a maximum power output of 14.9 bhp and a maximum torque output of 10.9 Nm.
-
UM DSR SM Braking & Safety
Given its entry-level positioning, the UM DSR SM misses out on many modern and basic safety features for keeping the costs in check.
-
UM DSR SM Verdict
For its price, the UM DSR SM offers a mechanically sorted package with a potent chassis, powerful engine, and slim profile which makes it an easy motorcycle to ride. However, what makes it feel like a built-to-cost motorcycle is the lack of features, especially in the safety department.
