Ural Gear Up Sportsman SE 750

The Ural Gear Up Sportsman SE is a combination of a two-wheeled motorcycle, which looks like a regular neo-retro roadster, and a sidecar, which is also designed in a retro theme. The overall combination looks very unique, something which has never been experienced as a factory-made vehicle in recent times.

Let’s start with the motorcycle part first. The Ural Gear Up Sportsman SE has a rounded LED headlamp at the front, which is encased within a big and rounded casing, with a curved and black plastic cap above it. It has a large curved front fender above the front wheel, which is mounted quite highly and gets a tubular protector around it. While a part of the rounded front indicators is placed on the left of the motorcycle, the other part is placed on the right side of the sidecar.

Like any other regular neo-retro roadster, the Ural Gear Up Sportsman SE gets a round-themed fuel tank, angular side body cowls and two seats mounted above its simple-looking frame which doesn’t get proper rear side body panels. The spoke wheels are wrapped with off-road spec tyres.

Talking about the sidecar here, it looks even bigger than the motorcycle part of the Ural Gear Up Sportsman SE. This sidecar has a curved design at the front, which accommodates a large curved and transparent windscreen with beige-coloured clothing over its mounts. There are two auxiliary rounded LED lamps mounted at its front.

The sidecar is wide enough to accommodate a full-sized adult, who can climb onto the seat with the help of a large side-mounted footrest on the right side of it. Behind the seat, the sidecar gets a large trunk with a spare tyre mounted on its top. The sidecar gets a tyre on its left side, above which there is a curved fender getting the turn indicator on it. The tail lamp is placed on the back of the fender of the sidecar. The Ural Gear Up Sportsman SE gets a small and rounded basic instrument console, which packs in an analogue speedometer and odometer.

It’s not only the design and engine of the Ural Gear Up Sportsman SE which are unique on their own – but the rest of the chassis mechanism is also very distinctive. The motorcycle part of the Ural Gear Up Sportsman SE gets an IMZ leading fork at the front and a double-sided swing-arm with two Sachs hydraulic shock absorbers at the rear. In addition, the sidecar also gets a single-sided swing-arm with a 5-step adjustable Sachs hydraulic spring shock absorber. The Ural Gear Up Sportsman SE rides on three 19-inch aluminium spoke wheels, with a braking setup of 295mm disc at the front, 256mm disc at the rear and 245mm disc on the sidecar.

The Ural Gear Up Sportsman SE is powered by a large four-stroke, air-cooled, flat-twin engine, which has a Boxer layout and displaces 749cc in volume. Paired to a 4-speed gearbox which also gets a reverse gear in addition, this engine pumps out a maximum power output of 41 bhp and a peak torque output of 57 Nm. The power produced by this engine is transferred to the rear wheel of the motorcycle as well as the side car’s wheel via a unique shaft-drive mechanism, which gives the Ural Gear Up Sportsman SE a one-of-a-kind two-wheel-drive system.

Despite having such a heavy mechanism and bodywork, the Ural Gear Up Sportsman SE misses out on prominent safety features. It doesn’t even get an ABS, which is a sore miss.

Keeping in mind the lack of features and slightly dated design on offer, the Ural Gear Up Sportsman SE is a pricey proposition to go for. However, it is also the fact that there is nothing like it in the market right now, which offers a whole lot different riding experience of a retro-themed trike. It offers the advantage of carrying an extra passenger on board, which is something not possible on a conventional two-wheeled motorcycle.
