UD Quester GWE

While the exterior design of the UD Quester GWE looks fresh and desirable, the same cannot be thought about for the interior cabin. It looks drab and lacks the level of modernity shown by its exterior design, thus giving it a very functional look.

The driver’s cockpit of the UD Quester GWE is comprised of a two-spoke steering wheel and a large instrument console which has simple looking dials but is very informative with a big orange backlit MID panel. The center console of the cabin looks wide and neatly laid out, with well-spaced rectangular housings for 1-DIN audio system and switches, apart from AC vents.

The cabin might look too simple for anyone’s liking, and the dull grey theme of the plastics don’t help matters even more. However, it has got a great sense of ergonomics, with all controls being in good reach of the driver.

The UD Quester GWE shares its entire design with the less heavy trucks from the Quester lineup, like the GKE and GDE. While this might not be a great move in its own sense of individuality, the fact that the design as a whole looks fresh and mighty does make the UD Quester GWE have a great road presence.

The UD Quester GWE comes with a huge and wide front windshield, which has got a three-intermittent wiper system and two grab handles below it. The UD Quester GWE has a very aggressive-looking front fascia, the main credits of which goes to the two-part grille design of the truck. The upper trapezoidal grille is mounted on the front apron, while the lower inverted trapezoidal grille is placed on the massive front bumper. Both these trapezoidal grilles come with horizontal slabs and are finished entirely in black plastic. 

There are a couple of design elements surrounding the grille, which further make the front profile look more interesting. The upper grille is flanked by vertical protruding bits, while the lower grille is flanked by slim arrowhead-shaped headlamp units, which also come fitted with daytime running lights and turn indicators within them. Apart from housing the lower grille and main headlamps, the large front bumper also comes fitted with rounded fog lamps on its lower outer corners, surrounded by black plastic panels.

Coming to the side, the UD Quester GWE looks smart, if not as unique as the front profile. The truck comes with conventional design cues like rearview mirrors mounted on the doors, tapering down window waistline and flared wheel arches. The wheel arches as well as side steps are finished in black plastic molding, which makes the UD Quester GWE look quite rugged and purposeful.

The main chassis of the UD Quester GWE includes rubber springs between the leaf springs and rear axles, which serve their purpose very well under different load conditions. For smooth operation, the chassis of the truck is further assisted by rubber journaled V-stays and reduction rods. The truck also comes fitted with a full air brake system with an automatic slack adjuster and exhaust brake system, for braking purposes.

The UD Quester GWE gets an 8-litre GH11E engine which is based on the Volvo D8 engine. This is the most powerful engine in the lineup of UD trucks, with a maximum power output of 440 bhp. The engine has been paired with a 12-speed manual gearbox.

The UD Quester GWE is armed with an optional ABS, apart from the compulsory inclusion of safety seat belts in the cabin.

While the interior cabin of the UD Quester GWE looks very simple, the aggressive exterior design serves as a compromise for it. The overall mechanicals is trouble-free, and showcase the typical Japanese levels of refinement and reliability.
